‘I Do, I Don’t’

INT. CHURCH ANTECHAMBER - DAY.
JAMIE paces back and forth in the antechamber of a church, getting increasingly anxious.  He checks his watch several times.

JAMIE
She’s late.  She’s gonna be late to her own wedding.

INT. BEDROOM - DAY.
SARAH looks at her reflection in the mirror.  She is dressed in her wedding dress, and sits at a dresser.  Her two BRIDESMAIDS, also dressed for the day, stand behind her.

BRIDESMAID 1
C’mon Sarah, it’s time to go.  The driver’s waiting.

BRIDESMAID 2
You don’t want to be late for your big day.

BRIDESMAID 1
Yeah Sarah, you don’t need to be late to make a grand entrance, everyone’s waiting especially for you.  (Beat)  Sarah?

Sarah ignores them.  She is reluctant to move, and remains staring at her reflection.

BRIDESMAID 2
Sarah, this is stupid.  Don’t you know how much time and money everyone’s put into this.

BRIDESMAID 1
Do you really wanna ditch Jamie at the altar?  Imagine how you’d feel.  It’s just wedding nerves, Sarah.

BRIDESMAID 2
And if you’re not happy you can always get divorced.  (Laughs).

Sarah turns around and looks at her bridesmaids.

BRIDESMAID 1
Sarah?

SARAH
ok, ok.  I’m ready.  Let’s get this over with.

She stands, and they walk out of the room together.

INT/EXT. CHURCH ANTECHAMBER/CHURCH - DAY.
Meanwhile, Jamie comes to a decision.  He walks out of the room, into the main altar room, which is set up for the wedding.  His MOTHER sees him and walks over.

MOTHER
Jamie, there you are.  I’ve just spoken to the bridesmaids.  Sarah’s on her way now.

Jamie keeps walking, ignoring his mother, who follows him through the church.

MOTHER
Jamie, wait.  Jamie!  Where are you going?

Jamie reaches the front door, slams it open and runs.

MOTHER
Jamie!  Come back.  Sarah’s on her way.  Jamie!

EXT. STREET OUTSIDE HOUSE - DAY.
Sarah walks out of the house with her bridesmaids.  A limousine waits for them.  As the bridesmaids get into the car, Sarah instead runs down the street to escape them.

BRIDESMAID 1
Sarah!  Wait!  Wait!  What are you doing?

BRIDESMAID 2
Sarah!  You can’t do this.

The bridesmaids chase after her.

BRIDESMAID 2
Sarah, stop!

EXT. ALLEYWAY - DAY.
Sarah slips down an alleyway and watches them run past.  She heaves a sigh of relief, then leans back against the wall.  As she does, she sees Jamie, bent over and catching his breath.

SARAH
Jamie?

He stands, startled.

SARAH
What are you doing here?

JAMIE
What are you doing here?

Jamie and Sarah stare at each other, then look away, embarrassed.

Sarah
I just wasn’t--

Jamie
--I didn’t think I--

SARAH
--ready--

JAMIE
--could go through with it--

SARAH
--I couldn’t handle--

JAMIE
--I'm not ready--

SARAH
--everyone staring--

JAMIE
--for this--

SARAH
--at me.

They look at each other again.  After a moment they laugh.

EXT. CHURCH - DAY.
The limousine drives up to the church and the two bridesmaids get out and walk towards the church.

BRIDESMAID 1
This is all you’re fault.  Why’d you have to be so pushy?

BRIDESMAID 2
She needed someone to push her in the right direction.  What were you doing putting those doubts in her head.  She never would have run away if you hadn’t said that stuff to her.

BRIDESMAID 1
Oh.  So what was all your talk of money and responsibility about?  You didn’t have to put so much pressure on her.

Jamie’s Mother runs out of the church.

MOTHER
Oh, it’s terrible, the groom has run away.  Poor Sarah, she’ll be devastated.  Where is she?
