THE INDEPENDENT FILM FESTIVAL
AT SANCTUARY COVE Background Information

The concept for the Film Festival was born through discussions between the Village Theatre owner, KEN STEGEMAN and one of The Village Theatre's most ardent supporters and film buffs, JOANNA ALEXANDER. Both felt that residents of the northern end of the Gold Coast were not being afforded the opportunity to enjoy unique, classic and contemporary films being made by Australian producers and directors.

Joanna's contacts in the film world responded with enthusiasm. Soon after, The Independent Film Festival at Sanctuary Cove, was born.

Within days of the project becoming a reality, the country's most respected producers, writers and directors came onboard together with their award-winning films.

Short filmmakers from Universities and film schools were invited to submit films for screening. The response was overwhelming and these films will play a major role in the festival lineup.

The Festival will become an annual event on The Village Theatre's calendar. This event affords film buffs a fantastic opportunity to meet the filmmakers and see a collection of unique and classic Australian films, from what is fast becoming.the film capital of Australia.

All the films to be shown at the festival are Australian product, with the majority of the films emanating from the Gold Coast and Brisbane and some being shown publicly for the first time. Several short films have been sourced from Bond University, and the Australian Screen Directors' Association (Queensland).

The festival program also includes a series of lectures by eminent local producers, screen writers, and directors, including Professor Bruce Molloy of Bond University; Chris Brown, producer of Blurred; Jonathan Teplitzky, director of Better Than Sex; Phil Avalon, producer/director of Liquid Bridge and The Pact; and Chris Nyst, writer of Gettin' Square.

Celebrities and personalities within the film industry have confirmed attendance. The festival will have wide national appeal with a focus on local content. It will promote the northern end of the Gold Coast as something more than just a holiday destination.
