Gold Coast Short Film Festival
5th Birthday Unlike Any Other
It's a birthday with a difference as the Gold Coasts very own Short Film Festival In The Bin' celebrates its fifth year entertaining locals. The millennium year saw In The Bin's creation, with the event held at the Palm Beach Currumbin State High School among a comfortable crowd of 300, it has since grown to become one of Australia's most successful and popular short film festivals.
In The Bin will be celebrating its 5th birthday in style from the 18th to the 24th of September with not only one but four festivals, ranging from School Films to Sports Films and of course In The Bin itself. In The Bin will also be held in conjunction with the Swell Sculpture Festival now in its second year, which will create over a week of cultural activity in Currumbin and on the Gold Coast.
In The Bin's goal has always been to support short film makers and also break down the barriers of what a short film really is. We are seeing these achieved by the quality of the films entered into In The Bin. Also the vast mixture of people who attend our events from film enthusiasts to motor-mechanics, its such a varied audience. Jed Cahill said about his festival.
In The Bin has expanded in more ways than one over the past two years to become one of Australia's most loved and accessible festivals. The Gold Coast festival has now become the benchmark event for In The Bin, which then tours throughout Australia. It has become The diamond in the rough, for the Australia Film Culture so to speak. We are getting the short film culture out to regional and remote communities such as Cooktown, Longreach, Portland even Coober Pedy.' Jed said.
Not only has the festival been touring these regions, it also has developed an Education Program within some of the remote communities. Participants have three days to shoot and edit their own short film, with their finished product screened as part of the touring festival in their community. This program has proven Australia is truly rich with storytelling and culture. From Hairy-men in Charters Towers, to chemically enhanced fruit in Mundubbera. The films that came out of this program were fascinating, and hopefully they have opened new possibilities for the students who participated.' Jed Cahill.
In The Bin has certainly gone a long way since 2000, but Jed admits it would not be where it is today with out the initial support from the 300 persons that attended that first event in 2000.
It was humbling the first year to see so many people turn out to a short film festival, something that had never been held on the Gold Coast before. It was in the middle of February, and really hot, I expected everyone to leave after the first half because of the heat, but to my surprise not one person did. In The Bin was originally going to be a one off event, but everyone told me how much fun they had and they told all their friends to look out for the next one. Someone suggested that I move the festival to an outdoor location, to get out of the heat. That's when I found the parkland opposite the Currumbin Wildlife Sanctuary, it was perfect. I think the outdoor venue bought In The Bin to the next level, we doubled audience figures each year, this year we expect over 3,500 people to attend.' Jed said.
The local community feels a part of In The Bin's success, and they should. I was 19 when I decided to start In The Bin and they supported it, either financially or promotionally. Without that support In The Bin Currumbin Festival wouldn't be where it is today. It's just as much a part of the community as it is a part of me.' Jed Cahill said.
Jed Cahill will have little time to rest after this years In The Bin Currumbin Festival as he takes it on the road again. This time round the festival heads south taking in New South Wales, Victoria, and South Australia. With the festival gaining valuable support from the Australian Film Commission the future looks bright for In The Bin.
