Just what the hell is a DoP, and why are they so important? Well, a DoP (or DP) is essentially a cinematographer.
Just what the hell is a Cinematographer?
I was getting to that. Sorry. Not a problem. You see, a Cinematographer/DoP/DP is responsible for making the film look good. When there are so many variables, such as film stock and grade, f-stops, t-stops, the invisible 180 degree line, eyelines, head room... (and that only barely scratches the surface) ...it's no wonder that Who Magazine listed Cinematography as one of the five most difficult/stressful jobs in the world (brain surgery was also in the five). Why? Because if something happens to the footage, that's a lot of time and money down the drain. Film is a visual medium (bet you didn't know that), so if something happens to the vision, there's almost nothing that can be done. When you hear a director gushing about the wonderful shots in his/her film, chances are they're not being egotistical; they're probably just feeling indebted to some genius DP. Many directors have paid tribute to the following, talented DoPs...
